2015 Season Recap – IR 50/50

In MN, we might define a successful season as one without any snow/ice during a match. If so, our 2015 season fits the description. All in all, the weather was decent, scores were above average and the camaraderie was exceptional.

We competed in six monthly matches plus the MN State match starting in April, which for a nice change did not have to be rescheduled due to weather. We experienced some turnover of competitors again with four of our better shooters dropping out, but replaced by some quality newcomers (Jim Jenne and Travis Beste). With a few of our old-timers returning, we held our numbers rather steady.

Scores, overall, continue to get higher as equipment, ammo and shooters follow a steadily improving trend. Before 2008, when we built the ten-bench range, we almost never saw a 250 score. Nowadays, even if you shoot 250, you might not win as we now are pushing toward the “Perfect Score” of 250/25 x’s.

In May, one of our best shooters, Doug Bell from New Richmond, WI, approached that point of perfection by posting a new World record of 250/24x in the 13.5# class.

Next season, we will be under the leadership of a new Match Director, Travis Beste who is taking over for me. I am retiring from that position after more than ten seasons. I wish Travis and all the other shooters, good luck and great shooting.

2015 MN State IR 50/50 Championship

Here is a recap of the 2015 MN State Championship match for IR50/50 held at Gopher Campfire Club, Hutchinson, MN on August 1, 2015:

Shooters from Wisconsin again dominated the MN State Championship match of IR50/50. Of the eleven shooters and ten contests, all the first place trophies and most of the second place trophies were carted off to our neighbor to the east.

Just like in 2014, Mitch Johnson shot extremely well winning the 10.5# Class and Three Gun Aggregate at the 50 meter distance and also the 13.5# Class and Two Gun Aggregate at the 50 Yards distance. In addition, Mitch racked up several second and third place positions.

Vying for best shooter of the match, Doug Bell racked up a number of medals winning the Sporter Class and Three Gun Aggregate at the 50 Yard distance and 13.5# Class and Two Gun Aggregate at the 50 Meters distance. He also placed either second or third in several other contests.

Filling out the Wisconsin runaway of this year’s State IR50/50 match was the husband and wife team of Fred and Louise Wickstrom each taking a first place win and some second and thirds.

Wind conditions were a little switchy resulting in only three“perfect 250” targets. These were, to no one’s surprise, recorded by Mitch (2) and Doug (1).

The weather was excellent with warm temps and light winds, so it was a very enjoyable day. Special thanks go to Stephanie Beste for her help with serving lunch to a bunch of hungry shooters.

Hopefully, next year, our MN contingent will nab a few of the top positions. See you then!

On May 16th, 2015, Doug Bell from New Richmond, WI shot a world record
target at Gopher Campfire’s May match. The previous world record had stood
for over 15 years.

The IR50/50 target contains 25 circular targets with five rings in
increasing size with the smallest, “10-ring” measuring just .250″. In the
center of that 10-ring is a small dot called the “X” which measures only
.035″ in diameter, about the size of a pencil lead. We shoot 25 shots, one
at each set of rings attempting to cause the bullet from our rimfire rifle
to touch the quarter inch ring each time, thus giving us a 250 point score.
In addition, to break ties, the number of X’s that the bullet touches is
also counted. The highest possible score on our target is therefore 250
points with 25 X’s. During the 13.5# class competition in May of this year,
Doug Bell scored a perfect 250, PLUS hit 24 of the 25 X dots. A remarkable
feat! No one had ever done that before in that class of IR50/50 competition.
So, Gopher Campfire is proud to present a photo of Doug with his World
Record target for all to admire and be amazed at!
